Leaders Pledges toward Net Zero: Research Cites more than 20% of World's Largest Corporates are Committing

“Never give up on something that you can’t go a day without thinking about,” once said silver-penning PM Winston Churchill. And casting a lens to a report just out from Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) and Oxford Net Zero, one sees clear evidence that an increasing number of CEOs and #leadership teams aren’t letting a day pass without thinking about their business’s #environmental impact.

Research from these joint bodies notes 21% of the world’s largest 2,000 public companies–accounting for $14trn sales globally--have now set #netzero commitments.

Of course, as with anything, in relation to #sustainability, actions speak louder than words. Rightly, the report cites concerns about ‘greenwashing’.

Long term vision (2050) must be married with short term, interim goals; a robust, transparent framework which systematically measures progress; and #governance to keep to leaders to account. The report notes only c. 1/3 of entities of those surveyed have interim targets and reporting mechanisms; less than half have a published plan.

Still, as silver-penning author Haruki Murakami once said, “Everybody has to start somewhere. Perfection doesn't happen right away.”
